Vented gas heaters come in many styles and sizes. Because they are vented, the moisture and combustion gases go outside instead of into your home. Vented heaters are legal just about everywhere, and can also be used as the primary source of heat (ventfree heaters are intended to be used as supplemental heat only).
Venting methods vary. Many are called "direct vent" because they vent directly through an exterior wall. These heaters generally include the vent kits in the box and are relatively easy to install. Other vented heaters will vent up an existing chimney, or up through the roof. One gas heater, the Williams Compact, can be mounted in a window (like an air conditioner) and the venting is self-contained. The Williams Compact can be removed in the summer.
Vented heaters lose some of their heat through the vent, typically 20-30%, so be sure to look at the actual heat production of the unit when sizing the heater for your space. A heater that uses 30,000 btus of gas might produce 24,000 btus of usable heat for the room, as an example.

Compact Window-Mount Heaters - $899 and $1099 (25k and 40k btu) The Williams Compact series comes in either 25k btu or 40k btu sizes to heat large rooms or even small houses. When you need a lot of heat, and you need to install it quickly and easily, nothing is easier than the Williams Compact. They can be installed permanently in a window or wall and they can easily be removed for the summer. Gas mount is either front or rear. The venting is built in, so there is no additional work required to vent the unit. Just put it in the window, attach a gas line, plug it in, and you're ready to go. Wall Furnaces - $599 to $1399 (25k to 65k btu) Wall furnaces are very popular on the West Coast, Southeast, and also in home additions everywhere. They come in many sizes and configurations that make them easy to adapt to your specific heating needs. Some are surface mounted on an existing wall, others can be recessed between two studs. Some vent from the top and through the roof, whereas others direct-vent through an exterior wall. Some are two-sided, so they provide heat to two rooms at the same time. Some have accomodations for running additional vents to other rooms. One model even has a fireplace look, with burning logs visible through a glass window.
